Lacking a solid understanding of the in vitro fertilization (IVF) process, many couples have pre-conceived notions about the treatment and its effects on the child conceived from that treatment. One prejudice that is pervasive even among the educated class is that IVF babies are not completely ‘normal’.

This misconception has been perpetuated by ignorance and holds no truth. Babies conceived from IVF treatment are just like other children as far as their physical attributes and mental capacity are concerned. And they come into the world in the same way – carried in the womb of their mother (or a surrogate mother) for nine months until delivered by a doctor, explained by Dr Rama Sofat.

While it is true that in IVF, the doctor inserts the embryo into the uterus of the female through the cervix, from that point on, the pregnancy is like any other.

The difference between normal conception and IVF is that in the case of IVF, the egg is fertilized by the sperm in a lab under the supervision of skilled and experienced scientists. A certain level of embryo growth takes place in the laboratory and and once the embryo has reached the right stage in its development, it is placed in the female’s uterus, after which the growth and entire pregnancy carries on as it would after natural conception.

Mostly couples opt for IVF because either the male or female partner (or in some cases, both partners) has a fertility issue that prevents natural conception.

While it is true that in IVF, the doctor inserts the embryo into the uterus of women through the cervix, the process of women getting pregnant hereafter is as normal as it happens in case of sexual intercourse between partners. One must understand that the ART technology that is used during the IVF treatment stands for Assisted Reproductive Technology, and not Artificial Reproductive Technology.

The only difference between IVF and normal process is that in case of IVF, sperms and eggs are fertilised in the lab under the supervision of seasoned doctors. The fusion takes place in the test tube instead of Fallopian tube.

Couples opt for IVF because either male partner is unable to produce sperms or high-quality sperm, or female partner is unable to produce eggs or high-quality eggs or there is blockage in Fallopian tubes. Their sexual intercourse does not produce embryo hence female partner can’t get pregnant. The fertilization and fusion of eggs in the lab is an alternative of sexual intercourse.

Once the embryo is produced by the fusion of sperm and eggs in the lab, it is transferred into the uterus of woman. And after that, the whole process is totally same as any usual case. After the embryo is transferred into the uterus, the woman gets pregnant and gives birth to a child after the stipulated time.

IVF babies are as normal as other children. In fact, until one is told, it is impossible to distinguish between IVF baby and other children and Dr Rama Sofat Hospital is one of the best infertility treatment hospital located in Ludhiana,Punjab. It has one of the highest IVF success rate.
