Tumor removed through laparoscopic surgery in a woman weighing 135kg


LUDHIANA: In one of the rare surgery performed at Dr Rama Sofat Hospital, College Road, doctors removed a uterus riddled with fibroids through laparoscopic surgery from the uterus of a woman weighing 135 kg. Due to the fibroids the uterus had enlarged to 16 to 18 weeks sized pregnancy which was a challenging situation before the doctors. However the successful surgery has literally saved the life of the woman.

There were chances of serious complications if the conventional open surgery was performed and woman would have face severe pain, increased chances of wound dehiscence, Deep venous thrombosis due to her obesity. Laparoscopic surgery proved fortunate for the woman and she was even discharged from the hospital within 48 hours of the surgery.


Sukhdeep Kaur 43, continued having heavy and painful periods about six months back. When she got the scanning done, multiple fibroids(tumors) were then noticed cropping up in the uterus. The woman had been avoiding the surgery and she continued to bear the problem for almost six years. From the past six months, due to heavy periods and excessive bleeding, her hemoglobin came to 9 gram only. When the problem rose out of the proportion, the woman was referred to Dr Rama Sofat  Hospital
